I find myself enjoying some of the occasional fanciful pictures that I draw, especially those that reach from abstract color patterns back towards the real scenes that could have inspired them. I also enjoy the real scenes I do that try to bring out some abstract version of the reality being depicted - simplifying and abstracting.
So perhaps there is something to the idea of a place where realism and abstraction meet - in the ideas of the artist and the 'story' they are depicting. These are things a painting
cannot derive from a photograph. The artist must intervene to create objects and colors.
